I’m sitting here tonight reflecting about the past month. So much has happened and it’s hard for me to even put words around it. A new school year has started, and I’m pursuing a dream that’s been in my heart for over 20 years, and it feels amazing! I love the quote, “Never give up on something you can’t go a day without thinking about.” I’m so grateful I took the action steps needed to walk out this reality. What an amazing opportunity to go back to school and do something I love.
I’ve just finished my fifth week of cosmetology school, where I’ve learned how to do facials, waxing, finger waves, pin curls, & roller sets. I’ve learned the basics of haircutting, perming and relaxing hair. I’ve found a great all organic, natural skincare line that I can’t wait to share with everyone and I spent time writing a script, and recording a video for a nationwide Vidal Sassoon Scholarship that I’m applying for through Beauty Changes Lives. Our Social Media Director showcased three of our scholarship videos yesterday in front of the entire school. I always get teary watching because everyone has such a powerful story and it takes so much courage and vulnerability to put it out there for everyone to see. I’m so proud of my classmates for being courageous and going for it and I’m thankful for how far I’ve come in my own personal journey.
I’m counting down the days to hear the results, the winners will be announced next week and I can hardly wait. I’ll definitely keep you posted, but in the mean time I want to share my video with you. I’ve posted the script below as well as the youtube link. The theme of the scholarship was to communicate what we wanted to “shout” through beauty. I hope you enjoy it and are inspired. Leave a comment and let me know what you think!
Have a Beauty Filled Day,
Beauty is captivating. It’s inspiring. It draws people in. It’s a monarch butterfly breaking free of its cocoon. It’s the waves of an ocean crashing upon the shore. It’s freedom, It’s transformation. Beauty is a shout that echoes all around the world. I’ve spent years of my life traveling around the world, and have learned to value the beauty and diversity in every tribe and culture.
As an artist I was born to create, often times you will find me with a paintbrush… a microphone…a journal…or a camera in my hands. In my heart, I’ve wanted to be an artist in the beauty industry for over twenty years but life’s journey took me down a different path. I’ve spent years of my life working with multiple non-profit organizations both locally and globally that seek to eradicate poverty while promoting personal identity and dignity. That path has now become the foundation preparing me for this next season of life.
I love the words of Vidal Sassoon: “I believe in the equality of man, and I believe that religious duties, consist in doing justice, loving mercy, and endeavoring to make our fellow creatures happy.“
He also said, that “Hairdressers are a wonderful breed. You work one on one with another human being and the object is to make them feel so much better, and to look at themselves with a twinkle in their eye.” This is my dream.
I believe that all of us are a beautiful masterpiece, an original work of art that is extremely valuable. If we do not add our unique color, vibrancy, or shape, life’s masterpiece will not be complete. We are the only person in the entire world who can paint our unique expression and add value to the canvas of life.
The Vidal Sassoon scholarship would empower me to help clients discover their unique expression of beauty and create an outward look that reflects the very essence of their true self. It’s been said that the essence of social justice is the restoration of dignity. I would be honored to carry on Vidal’s legacy as an aspiring beauty professional, I’m excited to use the skills I learn in Beauty School to help make a difference around the world, bringing another level of strength, confidence, dignity, and hope.
